Originally from the UK and now living in Australia, there have been many times when I couldn’t physically be there for the people I love, due to distance.
When my mum was living with MS, my dad cared for her while I watched from afar, wishing I could do more.
More recently close friends and my mother-in-law were diagnosed with cancer, I felt that same helplessness again, wanting to offer more than just words or flowers but not being close enough to pop round to their homes and give them a hand.
Starting my own parenting journey without a village nearby made it even clearer. The most meaningful gift you can give someone is practical help, exactly when they need it. But the demands of life don't alway make it possible, to do it yourself.
